Parks and Recreation Cleans Up After Flooding: Closures and Updates

Published on June 25, 2024

Following last weekend’s flash flooding, Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is actively engaged in cleanup efforts to ensure the safety of users.

Affected trails and parks will remain closed for proper cleanup and safety assessments. Closures will impact recreation programs and leagues. Registered participants will be directly contacted by the department regarding cancellations.

Several parks along the southern recreation trail loop and several sections of the trail are closed until further notice. Look for marked closures with barricades. Bridges in parks and on trails will undergo inspections and may take longer to reopen. A live map with the latest park and recreation trail closures is available at siouxfalls.gov/flood.

The schedule for crack seal application on the recreation trail has been revised due to the cleanup efforts. Work will begin Wednesday, June 26, on a 2.5-mile section through Sherman Park (from 12th Street to 41st Street). Future work dates will be announced after July 12 on social media.

“Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation prioritizes the safety of our community. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to restore full access to our parks and trails,” Brett Kollars, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, said. “For your safety, please respect all trail and park closures and do not bypass barricades.”

The closure map will be continually updated at siouxfalls.gov/flood as parks and trail sections become safe to reopen.
