We respond to fires and other life-threatening situations.

Our job isn't only putting out fires. We handle accidents, search and rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergencies. Our brave men and women stand ready 24/7 to address crises.

We are Sioux Falls Fire Rescue’s largest division. Split into North and South battalions serving Sioux Falls, our division includes more than 200 members and 12 fire stations. SFFR also has agreements with some local counties and the SD Office of Homeland Security to respond to extreme incidents, such as weapons of mass destruction, hazardous materials, or statewide emergencies that exceed local response.

Emergency Response

Our primary role is to respond to emergencies. This includes fires. It also includes medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, vehicle accidents, and more.

Fire Suppression

We use special equipment, such as fire engines, hoses, and breathing gear, to extinguish fires. We coordinate our efforts to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Rescue Operations

We rescue people from hazardous situations, including extraction from burning buildings and saving those trapped in vehicles from accidents. We also handle swiftwater rescues during floods. We train in various techniques and use special equipment to extricate victims safely.

Hazardous Materials Response

We handle incidents involving hazardous materials, such as chemical spills. Using special protocols and equipment, we contain the spill and protect the public and the environment from harm.

Trained as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) or paramedics, we provide basic and advanced medical care to people until medics arrive.

What are schedules like for firefighters?

Firefighters report to work at 8 a.m. and work a 24-hour shift until the following morning. Their schedule consists of a nine-day cycle. Each team works one 24-hour shift, followed by 24 hours off. Then they work another 24-hour shift, followed by 24 hours off. Then they work a final 24-hour shift, followed by four consecutive days off.

What does it take to be a firefighter?

Do you provide smoke detectors?

SFFR, in partnership with the American Red Cross, provides smoke alarms and installation free of charge to residents in Sioux Falls. You can call 2-1-1 to request smoke alarms in your home. Find out more on our Smoke Alarm Program page.
