Dave Pfeifle

City Attorney

Dave’s re-appointment as City Attorney was effective April 3, 2023.

In that role, he oversees the Sioux Falls City Attorney’s Office (CAO), which serves as primary legal advisor to the City Council, Mayor, and all City departments. It also performs these main functions: 

• Works with the Human Relations Commission & the Disability Awareness and Accessibility Review Board;
• Prosecutes violations of City ordinances; and
• Drafts / reviews / revises City contracts and ordinances.

This is Pfeifle’s third stint as a city attorney. He previously served as in that role for Pierre and Sioux Falls (2010-17). He’s also served as state’s attorney for Stanley County and as public defender for Lincoln County. Most recently he was executive director of the SD Public Assurance Alliance, providing liability and property coverages for most local governments in South Dakota, including Sioux Falls.

His bachelor’s and law degrees were granted by the University of South Dakota.

Professional passion: “I’ve had had a passion for public service throughout my 29 years practicing law in South Dakota.”

Best part of my job: “Advising City leaders while working with like-minded public servants.”

Personal interests: “I spend time with his wife and two adult children engaging in outdoor activities or attending their many college activities. I also enjoy reading biographies and playing the guitar.”
