Other Floodplain Information
Areas at Risk of Flooding
Some areas are at more risk than other to flooding. The source of flooding will be the main reason for specific location to be more likely to flood than others. Snow melt and heavy rain up stream will cause flooding impacts in Sioux Falls, and to see an interactive map showing how areas within the Big Sioux River.
Smaller rain events that impact localized areas don't tend to change very much, so using the repetitive loss area maps will show general areas where there have been at least two flood insurance claims over any ten year period. This map shows all properties within a similar area that may experience flooding during heavy rain events. Some areas that are also known to flood during these events may not show up on this map due to not enough insurance claims. A prime example of this is near the Mall area at West 43rd Street. and South Westport Avenue.
